Tri County Youth Services Bureau is committed to serving our clients in the most effective way possible; and we feel that is by utilizing evidence-based practices whenever possible.  One such  practice we use in counseling is Trauma Focused- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).
This is a model endorsed by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network
(NCTSN) and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).
The overall goal of TF-CBT is to lessen the many debilitating symptoms that come from exposure to trauma in a child’s life, such as abuse or neglect.  Unfortunately, childhood trauma is all too common these days.
According to the NCTSN, at least one quarter of children will have experienced some type of trauma by the time the reach the age of 18.

Here at TCYSB we see these issues as well.  When working with this clientele, TF-CBT allows us to address the symptoms of trauma with a structured, research proven method.
TF-CBT is completed in approximately 12-25 sessions.  Some of these are with the child alone and some with caregivers as well.  TF-CBT is aimed for children ages 3 to 21, making it a perfect choice for our disconnected youth and children whose parent(s) have been incarcerated.
The model has been proven to work with both genders, across multiple races and ethnicities, and in all types of socio-economic statuses. The backbone of TF-CBT is to provide youth with the tools to handle their symptoms (relaxation strategies, properly identifying emotions, learning to control thoughts, etc.) and then to write a “trauma narrative” about the trauma(s) in the youth’s life.  This allows the youth to take more control over what is ultimately a very chaotic part of their life.
TF-CBT also heavily encourages the involvement of supportive caregivers.
Caregivers are encouraged to learn the same techniques the youth do, and to practice with them. Parenting struggles are addressed in counseling also.  TF-CBT is really a holistic approach to coping with trauma. TCYSB has seen wonderful outcomes from implementing this method with our clients!
